​Lineage: The Winston Oh Travelogue Award’s 25th anniversary exhibition

Drawing from my archive of amateur 35mm soldier slides in Vietnam (1958-1973), a 1968 slide of five soldiers bathing in a brook spoke to me on the theme of lineage. The scene evokes a primitive tribal setting, and the metaphor of water, like the Mekong rivers branching tributaries, recall family lines extending and merging. The sacred Mekong’s source is seen as the origin of this lineage, while the soldiers symbolize a similar "origin" Homo sapiens. My visit to Razorback Mountain in 2012 connected me to family members who served in Dong Ha Valley and the found photograph. The deterioration of the archived slides, enhanced in replication, collapse time in the plastic like paint.

​This exhibition celebrates a quarter century of the Winston Oh Travelogue Award as a testament to the lineages of care and culmination of research practice for the ecipients over the years McNally School of Fine Arts.
Since its inception in 1999, our students have been empowered to travel to different corners of the world to experience sensorially the paradigm shifts that being in another culture and space entails.
This Lineage edition of the showcase will see our students and past awardees coming together to make works about connecting the dots backwards and into the future, and drawing a line as a form of reflection about their artistic practice during their Travelogue Award to the following years.
